Remodelling: Old Cut Diamond Ring
My last commission of 2023 was a particularly enjoyable one - remodelling a 200 year old gold ring with old cut diamonds into new, contemporary ring and earrings. A lovely way to retain the sentimental value of a great grandmother's ring but in a size that fits and style that can be worn everyday.
The largest diamonds were closer to a cushion cut than round - a feature that seems to be quite common in old cut diamonds.
A cushion cut is square but softer, with curved edges. My client and I decided to set the 3 central stones in cushion cut style settings which worked brilliantly for this particular ring.
I set the smaller diamonds into round settings to make some more classic gold stud earrings. By carfeully cutting the seat for the diamonds I was able to hide the uneven edges to give them the appearance of being round. It involves some careful cutting on the inside of the setting, specific to the shape of each diamond!
