Finishes And Personalisation
The finer details of bespoke jewellery
Below you will find some examples of finishes and personalisation for your bespoke jewellery. Their are pros and cons to each but life is too short to worry about such things, so I recommend you just pick the one you like best.
If you choose a finish and then change your mind at a later date then it is often possible to change the finish. Though please note, there are always exceptions to the rule - an oxidised finish is hard to remove and for some custom pieces it may not always be possible to alter a finish depending on the design. If in doubt, please ask.
Textures And Effects
A hammered or textured effect on a metal surface adds a unique dimension to a piece of jewellery and can transform a plain piece. It can add extra shine as it reflects light off the surface at different angles.
Different sizes and types of hammers produce different size and shape ripples.
Textured jewellery is particularly practical as it scuffs and scratches aren't so obvious.
Finishes
There are no specific advantages or disadvantages to how your jewellery is finished. All jewellery that is worn regularly will show marks and scuffs over time, in particular rings that come into contact with lots of surfaces.
A polished finish will dull down slightly whereas a satin or brushed finish will polish up over time - both ending up somewhere in the middle.
Fortunately all of these finishes can easily be re-applied.
An oxidised finish can only be applied to silver jewellery - in effect it is accelerating the natural tarnish that appears on silver over time.
Engraving And Personalisation
You can add a special touch to your jewellery by personalising it with a name, date, message or image to give it an additional personal element.
I can stamp your jewellery using number and letter stamps which is simple yet effective and good for more organic pieces.
Alternatively laser engraving has the advantage of allowing you to choose pretty much any font you like and even have images engraved. Engraving is more appropriate for finer jewellery, and for fitting in a longer message.
Please ask if you would like to add personalisation to a piece of jewellery.
