Two Very Special Rings

When an old school friend of mine (I'll not specify our age!) got in touch to ask about a wedding ring for her partner I was delighted to be able to help!

His wedding band was to be made using his mum's and step dad's wedding rings which were of huge sentimental value.

It can be a very emotional process having your own sentimental gold melted down and made into something new and it does involve a lot of trust. There were definitely some nerves when the rings were handed over, but I think it helped that I was friend's with Dan's partner and I felt very privileged to be trusted with remodelling them. I think lots of dog chat and my lovely Daisy dog helped - you can always trust a dog person right?!

Melting the Gold

Sometimes the process of melting and rolling old gold has to be done two or three times to get it to a workable quality. Inherited gold in particular can be a bit of an unknown quantity as the exact mix of alloy's  can vary greatly. But Dan's gold was spot on first time and melted and rolled like a dream!

I then had to do lots of filling to shape the ring into a soft D-shape band with a comfort fit (rounded edge) on the inside.

Melting, rolling, annealing, filing and polishing the new ring!

After making the ring I was left with two little end pieces of gold that I pondered what to do with.

Normally I would simply return the gold to my client, but in this case it somehow just felt right to make some little round gold earrings with the two leftover pieces. The gold was clearly held so much meaning and so I decided to make some very simple gold stud earrings for Annys to treasure.

The finished Rings

It was wonderful to hear from Annys and Dan at the start of 2025 that not only were they now happily married but had snuck off to Greta Green to get hitched!

Has anyone else got something in their eye...
